This policy explains what personal data we collect when you sign up to Modern Black Art, how we use it, who we share it with and the rights you have over it. We’re based in the United Kingdom and we follow UK GDPR.
1. Who’s responsible for your data
Modern Black Art is the data controller for the information you give us. You can reach us at hello@modernblackart.com.
2. What we collect
When you sign up, we collect:
- Your first name and last name
- Your email address
- Your city and country (if you provide them)
- The role you select (Art Lover, Artist, Collector, Curator, Gallerist or Other)
- Your IP address, which our email partner uses to roughly identify the city you signed up from
- For the Art Basel form: whether you’re planning to attend
If you make a donation, Stripe collects your card details directly — we never see or store your card number. Stripe shares back the donation amount and a confirmation that the payment succeeded.
3. How we use it
- To send you invitations to our events and our monthly newsletter
- To segment our list so we send you relevant information (for example, Art Basel updates only to people who signed up for them)
- To process and acknowledge donations
- To respond to messages you send us
Our legal basis is your consent (when you sign up) and, for donations, the performance of a contract.
4. Who we share it with
We use a small number of trusted providers to run our community. Each of them processes your data on our behalf:
- MailerLite — sends our newsletter and event invitations. Stores your name, email, location and the role you selected.
- Stripe — processes donations. Stores your payment details directly; we only see the donation amount and your email.
- Vercel — hosts our website. Sees your IP address and browser information when you visit the site, as is standard for any web hosting.
We do not sell your data to anyone, ever.
5. International transfers
MailerLite, Stripe and Vercel may process your data outside the UK (typically in the EU or US). Where they do, they rely on standard contractual clauses or other safeguards approved under UK GDPR to protect it.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your contact details for as long as you’re a member. If you unsubscribe, we remove you from our active list but may keep a record of your email address so we don’t accidentally re-add you.
Donation records are kept for at least six years, as required by UK tax and accounting rules.
7. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Ask for a copy of the data we hold about you
- Correct anything that’s wrong
- Ask us to delete your data
- Withdraw your consent to marketing at any time
- Complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@modernblackart.com. We’ll respond within one month.
The simplest way to opt out of marketing is to click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email we send you.
8. Cookies
This site does not currently set marketing or tracking cookies. Our hosting provider (Vercel) sets a small number of essential cookies required for the site to function. If we add analytics or other non-essential cookies in future, we’ll update this policy and ask for your consent first.
9. Changes
If we change this policy in a way that affects how we use your data, we’ll let you know by email or by a notice on the site. The “Last updated” date at the top shows the most recent revision.
10. Contact
